Facility Management
SBWMA purchased the Shoreway Recycling & Disposal Center in March, 2000. The facilities are operated by Allied Waste. As the owner of the facilities, the SBWMA is responsible for maintaining it and its machinery for the purposes of collecting and processing solid waste and recyclables.
Recent projects include:
- Installing new loadout scales to replace aging scales
- Installing a new baler to increase recycling output
- Repairing the floor of the transfer station
- Replacing the HVAC units with more energy efficient units
- Authorization to replace the Recycling Center roof, complete structural upgrades, and installing additional skylights to increase the natural light to the building.
Facility Master Plan Underway
In 2006 the SBWMA initiated a master planning process for the Shoreway facilities. The goal of the master plan is to improve customer convenience, increase facility operational efficiency and reduce waste by diverting more materials from landfill. The Plan will consider the following:
- Construction upgrades to the recycling building and the installation of new equipment to process commingled (single stream) recyclables.
- Expansion of the transfer station/disposal center to reduce traffic congestion and improve waste diversion.
- The incorporation of environmental design features such as onsite power generation and the use of sustainable materials.
