Transforming the Way We Think about Trash

Earth Day is April 22. What will you do to celebrate? The Earth Day Network selected Climate Change as the theme this year, so here are a few ideas to get you in the mood to celebrate Earth Day everyday.

Reduce :: Buy Recycled Products and Reduce CO2 Emissions

It's a fact: recycled-content products use less energy to manufacture than from raw materials. Use your purchasing power to help reduce your CO2 emissions by trying something new:

  • Recycled-content paper with a twist: Purchase recycled paper containing 30% or more post-consumer waste of 18 pound sheet basis instead of the usual 20.
  • Awards: Beautiful awards are manufactured from recycled materials, such as glass and plastic.
  • Logo pens: Check out pens made from recycled cardboard or plastic on which you can put your logo.

Think outside your typical big box to buy your recycled-content products.

Reuse :: Quality Office Furniture at Discount Prices

Ever wonder what happened to those cubicles and desks when the dot-com bubble burst? Many of these high quality products ended up at office liquidators. Some examples of high-quality office furniture you can buy are:

  • Stacking, desk, and reception chairs are offered at a fraction of what they sell retail.
  • Check out the shapes, sizes, and colors of file cabinets are available for a song.
  • Believe it or not, white boards are also available at one-fourth or one-half the cost of new ones.

Recycle :: Clean Your Files Week

Participate in "Clean Your Files Day", designed to promote workplace recycling, encourage more recycling at work, improve both the quantity and quality of fiber collected, and engage businesses who don't already recycle office paper to implement a program.

It's easy: set a date, advertise your event in your office, order additional paper recycling containers, clean your files, and recognize your collective contributions with an in-house lunch.

Obtain a toolkit and additional information through the US Conference of Mayors at http://www.usmayors.org/USCM/recycle/clean/cyfd.htm.

Do your part to help the planet: reduce, reuse, and recycle!
