Transforming the Way We Think about Trash

Winter is here, but that doesnít mean you have to be left out in the cold to help the planet.

Reduce :: Are you a coffee junkie? Keep the habit, cut the cup.

Instead of a disposable paper or foam cup, sip that triple-shot soy latte out of your own travel mug or tumbler. Hanging out for a while? Order your drink "for here" in the cafe's own ceramic or glass mug.

Small changes make a big difference, especially for daily drinkers. Individually, one cup of coffee purchased everyday in a disposable container contributes about 22.75 pounds of waste per year.

What can you do? Simple, easy changes - start bringing your own mug or request a ceramic mug from your favorite cafe when staying in.

Reuse :: Winter chic for cheap

Thinking about getting a new winter coat or scarf? Consider purchasing a vintage one at a thrift or antique store. Not only do these items offer you high quality clothes for less, but you're participating in reuse while supporting locally-operated businesses. This simple action can have a big impact by supporting the local economy, minimizing the impact of your purchase on the earth, and getting you a unique item. For some businesses that cater to Reuse Chic, visit RethinkWaste.org.

Recycle :: Don't Trash Your Cell Phone...Recycle It!

Be part of the million phone collection drive. Help CollectiveGood, EarthWorks, and RethinkWaste reach their campaign goal to recycle 1 MILLION CELL PHONES IN 1 YEAR by Earth Day 2006 in April! All proceeds go to various community programs, such as the Police Activities League or local libraries. Most cities have a local collection point at City Hall. To identify locations to drop off phones, please visit RethinkWaste.org.

Do your part to help the planet: reduce, reuse, and recycle!
