Beyond the Cart

  • On-Call Bulky Item Collection
Twice a year, Recology San Mateo County offers a scheduled pickup service of large and bulky items. Residents may set out:
    • 2 cubic yards of bagged/boxed solid waste
    • One large appliance (such as a washing machine, dryer, refrigerator or freezer)
    • One bulky item (such as a mattress, couch or tires)
    • E-Scrap (such as a TV, computer or computer monitor)
No liquids, dirt, rock, concrete, asphalt, hazardous waste or items that exceed 5 feet in length.
Contact Recology at (650) 595-3900 to schedule an appointment.
Or you can take appliances to the Shoreway Environmental Center at 333 Shoreway Road, San Carlos. Fees apply for large appliances. Call South Bay Recycling at (650) 802-8355 for details.

Before scheduling a pickup, or heading to Shoreway, we encourage residents to consider donating the items instead. Visit Recology's Don't Toss It! page for more information.

More reuse and recycling options are also available by searching theRecycleWorks database.
  • Battery and Cell Phone Recycling
Batteries and cell phones both contain toxic materials such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury and many other toxic materials that threaten human health and the environment. In fact, both batteries and cell phones are now classified as Universal Waste and are banned from disposal with garbage and must be handled properly.

Single-family residents in the RethinkWaste service area can conveniently recycle household batteries and cell phones at the curb! Simply place household batteries (no auto batteries) and cell phones in a zip-type plastic bag and place on the lid of your blue Recycle Cart for recycling on your collection day. Tape button-type batteries and wrap cell phones in paper before placing in the zip-type bag.

Do NOT place batteries and cell phones inside the cart. The bagged batteries and cell phone go on top of the lid of your blue Recycle Cart.

In addition, those who have theĀ Door-to-Door Household Hazardous Waste Collection program in their community, can include batteries and cell phones as part of the items they set out for pick up.

Batteries and cell phones can also be dropped off for free at RethinkWaste's Shoreway Environmental Center, located at 333 Shoreway Road in San Carlos.
  • Used Motor Oil & Oil Filter Recycling
Did you know that just one quart of motor oil that is disposed of improperly can contaminate up to 2 million gallons of Bay water?

Recology San Mateo County offers curbside collection of used motor oil and used oil filters for recycling at no additional cost. Recology will provide residents with up to five one-gallon plastic jugs for your used motor oil and up to five plastics bags for your used oil filters at a time. Or you can use your own one-gallon jugs with sealable lids for motor oil and zip-type plastic bags for oil filters.

Place your oil jugs and filter bags on the curb next to your Recycle cart for collection. This program is only for used motor oil and oil filters. No other auto fluids or other fluids, or auto parts are accepted.

Contact Recology through their website or by calling (650) 595-3900 to request oil jugs and filter bags.
  • Holiday Tree Collection
Once you've removed all the tinsel, lights, decorations and stands from your holiday tree, you can leave the tree next to your green Compost Cart, and Recology will pick it up for you between December 26 and January 31.

Please make sure trees are 8 feet and under. If it's taller than 8 feet, cut the tree into lengths of 8 feet or less. After January 31st, trees must be cut up and placed inside the Compost Cart for collection.
