Household Hazardous Waste

  • Door-to-Door HHW Program Ends December 31, 2016

The Door-to-Door Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Program operated by Waste Management’s At Your Door Special Collection is ending December 31, 2016 for all residents in the RethinkWaste service area.

On November 17, 2016, the SBWMA Board of Directors declined to accept the proposed new 5-year pricing presented by Waste Management for its At-Your-Door Special Collection Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Service that currently exists in the entire SBWMA service area.
Waste Management and RethinkWaste staff negotiated in good faith to extend the current contract for an additional five years, however, the main reasons why this residential program’s contract was not renewed are:
    • The annual price would double by the end of the 5-year extension (from about $140 per pick up to almost $300 per pick up) ;
    • Annual program participation rates were less than six percent; and
    • San Mateo County has an existing HHW collection drop-off program, which residents can participate in at any time.

Residents can still schedule an At Your Door curbside pickup appointment before the end of the year, to properly manage items such as paint, solvents, insecticides, cleaning products, fluorescent lamps, laptops, computers monitors, TVs and sharps. The program is available at no additional cost to all residents, including single-family homes, condominiums, townhouses and apartments. Participation is simple:
        1. Residents call toll free 800-HHW-PKUP (800-449-7587) or send an email to atyourdoor@wm.com to schedule a collection appointment. It is recommended that you call by December 9, 2016 to ensure a 2016 appointment.
        2. Receive your collection kit within a few days. The kit contains an instruction sheet, plastic bag for those items that must be bagged, labels and a tie for the bag.
        3. Place items near the front door, garage or other area near the front of the home by 7 am on the scheduled day. A collection vehicle will collect the items from the residence on the day of the appointment.

Household Hazardous Waste material can continue to be taken to the San Mateo County HHW collection facility or a temporary collection event if residents are unable to participate in the At Your Door program by December 31. Visit www.smchealth.org/hhw or call (650) 363-4718 (select option 3) to schedule an appointment. Appointments are available Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

  • San Mateo County HHW Program
For All San Mateo County Residents

The words “hazardous waste” may conjure images in your mind of toxic green slime oozing out of huge industrial barrels. But did you know you probably have hazardous waste in your own home? Most households do. In fact, most families use about 60 toxic products! Common items like cans of leftover paint, dead batteries, cans of ant and roach spray, used motor oil, and weed killer can pollute the soil and water—and harm your trash collector—if you throw them in the garbage.

Visit the San Mateo County Department of Environmental Health or call (650) 363-4718 to find out about safe, convenient and free disposal options.

The County HHW program is available to all San Mateo County residents, including those that are participating in the Door-to-Door HHW Program.
  • California Paint Stewardship Program

    PaintCare

In addition to the Door-to-Door HHW collection program, the County's HHW program, and free drop-off of latex paint at the Shoreway Environmental Center, residents have one more new way to recycle old paint. The PaintCare program is an industry sponsored paint stewardship, non-profit program launched in October 2012.

    Residents

Residents may recycle latex and oil-based paint at these locations in the RethinkWaste service area.

Please call ahead to confirm, and to determine if the location has limits on the amount they will accept, especially if you have more than 5 gallons of paint.
