Shoreway Environmental Center School Groups and Public Tours will be available starting February 1, 2017.

School Group Tours

Tours of the award winning state-of-the-art Shoreway Environmental Center offer students and the community an opportunity to learn first-hand what happens to their recyclables, yard trimmings, food scraps and garbage at a working Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and Transfer Station. The program seeks to engage students and increase their knowledge through active learning experiences. The curriculum goal is to educate kids in resource conservation and 4R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot/Composting) behaviors so that they will be empowered to conserve resources in their lives and practice recycling at their schools and residences.

The tour activities are based on the best practices in environmental education and provide connections to the California State Common Core Standards.

The award winning Environmental Education Tour Program strives to deliver quality, memorable, hands-on learning experiences to school groups and the general public. A Tour Menu  gives teachers an opportunity to choose a call-to-action supplemental activity they would like to engage in with their students.

Standard Tour includes:

  • A two-hour visit to the Transfer Station, Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), Education Center with museum quality exhibits, Outdoor Environmental Education Center, Solar and Water Conservation Kiosk, and more.
  • Learning about resource conservation and the 4Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot) that are aligned to the State Content Standards.
