About

RethinkWaste, also known as the South Bayside Waste Management Authority (SBWMA), is a joint powers authority formed by twelve local government jurisdictions (Atherton, Belmont, Burlingame, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, the County of San Mateo and the West Bay Sanitary District) in San Mateo County, California. These jurisdictions are known as the RethinkWaste Member Agencies and was formed in 1982. 

OUR LEADERSHIP

RethinkWaste is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of one elected official from each of our Member Agencies. The staff is managed by Executive Director Joe La Mariana who reports directly to the Board. Our Board and Staff are responsible to the rate payers.

OUR CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

RethinkWaste:

1) owns and manages the Shoreway Environmental Center in San Carlos, California which receives all the recyclables, green waste and garbage collected from the Member Agencies. 

2) provides strategic oversight, support and management of service providers that collect, process, recycle and dispose of materials on behalf of RethinkWaste. 

3) educates Member Agency residents and businesses through innovative and cost-effective waste reduction, recycling, and solid waste programs. 

4) advocates for environmental best practices through policy and legislation.

OUR CONTRACTING PARTNERS

Recology San Mateo County provides Recycle, Compost and Garbage collection services for the 435,000 RethinkWaste residents and 11,000 businesses. 

South Bay Recycling (SBR) operates the Shoreway Environmental Center in San Carlos, California on behalf of RethinkWaste.

RethinkWaste’s offices are located at 610 Elm Street in San Carlos, CA on the second floor of the San Carlos Library.

The Shoreway Environmental Center is located at 333 Shoreway Road in San Carlos, California.
