Events At Shoreway

RethinkWaste hosts two free community events every year. Earth Day @ Shoreway is held in the spring and Rethink Recycling Day is held in the fall.

Earth Day @ Shoreway Exclusive Activities:

  • Petting Zoo: Come give your favorite farm animals some love!
  • Face Painting: Have your face painted to look like your favorite animal.
  • Trash to Art Contest Winner Recognition: Join us in celebrating the Trash to Art Contest winners. The Trash to Art Contest is held every year to inspire 3rd through 5th grade students in our service area to turn everyday trash and recyclables into art.

Rethink Recycling Day Exclusive Activities:

  • Food Preserving Demonstrations: Master Food Preservers will lead food demos, including pickling and jams/jellies. Participants may have an opportunity to taste test or take some home!
  • Book and Clothing Swap: Have extra clothes and books you no longer use or need? Or do you want new-to-you clothes and books? Check out our swap area!
  • Document Shredding: Bring paper documents and confidential materials for safe and secure shredding completed onsite. Limit three standard size bankers boxes (10″x12″x15″) per household. Must show proof of residency in RethinkWaste’s service area.* Shredding lasts until 2pm or until the truck is full, whichever comes first.

*RethinkWaste service area: Atherton, Belmont, Burlingame, County of San Mateo, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, and West Bay Sanitary District

Both events include the following:

  • Food: Enjoy free lunch on us!
  • Facility Tours: Get a unique, behind-the-scenes look at where your compost, recycling, and trash go after you throw it out (into the correct bin, of course!)
  • Compost: After you put your food waste, dirty paper, and food soiled paper into the green bin, it turns into nutrients for your garden! Pick-up free compost – bags and shovels are provided, or you can bring your own bucket.
  • Household Battery Disposal: Receive convenient bags for proper household battery disposal or drop-off your used household batteries at the Shoreway Public Recycling Center.
  • Electronics Recycling: Drop-off your unusable computers, tablets, phone chargers, and more to be properly recycled at the Shoreway Public Recycling Center.
  • Vendors: Come learn about different agencies, businesses, and non-profits serving our RethinkWaste community.
  • Raffle Ticket: Earn a chance to win several eco-friendly prizes. Ticket holders must be present to win. Limit one prize per household.
  • Our office on the second floor of the San Carlos Library from 9am-5pm Monday through Friday, located at 610 Elm Street Suite 202, San Carlos.
  • The Shoreway Environmental Center (please notify us beforehand).
