In-person tours of the Shoreway Environmental Center provide an inside look at how recyclables are sorted in our upgraded Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and how compost and garbage are consolidated at the Transfer Station. RethinkWaste staff will also review bin sorting, discuss reuse and reduction tips, and answer all your tricky questions about where items belong (or don’t belong!) when you no longer need them.
Registration is free. Tours are limited to a maximum of 15 guests per tour. Tours are approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes long.
RethinkWaste reserves the right to cancel any tour due to staffing availability, weather conditions, or insufficient sign-ups
Tour requirements:
- All tour participants are required to wear an agency provided hard hat, safety glasses and vest.
- All registrants are required to complete a waiver form. Forms can be filled out electronically on site before the tour. Each participant must fill out an individual waiver form.
- Additional tour details and requirements, including appropriate attire and parking instructions, will be sent via your confirmation email.

UPDATE FOR 2025/2026 TOUR OPENINGS: Due to severely reduced parking and site access, the number of In-Person Tours (both School and Business/Organization) will be limited through 2025 and 2026.
For group tours that are unable to carpool or surpass the maximum number of allowed vehicles (5 vehicles total), bus/shuttle services will be required as there is limited parking available on site. If transportation is a hardship, please reach out to us.

Thank you for your interest in touring the Shoreway Environmental Center! Tours of the award winning state-of-the-art Shoreway Environmental Center in San Carlos offer business/organization groups an opportunity to learn first-hand what happens to their recyclables, yard trimmings, food scraps, and garbage at a working Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and Transfer Station. Tours are about 75 minutes long and take place weekly, every:- Monday at 1pm
- Tuesday & Wednesday, 10am and 1pm
- 2nd, 4th, and 5th Thursday at 10am
- Friday at 10am
