In-person tours of the Shoreway Environmental Center provide an inside look at how recyclables are sorted in our upgraded Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and how compost and garbage are consolidated at the Transfer Station. RethinkWaste staff will also review bin sorting, discuss reuse and reduction tips, and answer all your tricky questions about where items belong (or don’t belong!) when you no longer need them.
Registration is free and open to the public. Tours are limited to 15 registrants. Minors under the age of 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children must be at least 8 years old to attend.
Beginning April 2022, in-person public tours will be offered on the first Thursday day of the month at 10 a.m. If the first Thursday of the month is a holiday or immediately following a holiday, public tours will be held the following Thursday (the second Thursday of the month).
RethinkWaste reserves the right to cancel any tour dependent on staff coverage and the current status of COVID-19 in San Mateo County.
In accordance with COVID-19 safety procedures, ALL attendees (including children) must be fully vaccinated and able to provide proof of vaccination at the time of the tour. In addition, ALL tour attendees are required to wear a mask for the entire duration of the tour, as social-distancing of 6 feet is not always possible in all parts of the facility.
Additional tour details and requirements, including appropriate attire and parking instructions, will be sent via your confirmation email.
If you are unable to meet these in-person tour requirements, we also offer virtual public tours every first Thursday of the month at 5 p.m.
